ASAPA Members

Participate in the general activities of the Association

Form part of the broader network of professionals involved in southern African archaeology

Access the online membership platform where you can manage your membership profile, download an electronic membership certificate; access the documents library and register for ASAPA-related events

Receive updates via the ASAPA Newsletter on archaeology related matters, such as news, events, job opportunities and the latest publications

Receive an annual subscription to the South African Archaeological Bulletin (2 issues per year)

Pay a discounted registration rate at biennial ASAPA Conferences

Membership Types
Professional
​
A person accepted for professional membership of ASAPA must meet the following criteria:
-
Has earned an Honours degree or equivalent qualification in archaeology at a recognised tertiary institution
-
Is actively engaged in archaeological employment, or is involved in full-time research in southern Africa, at the time of submission of the application
-
Has submitted the required supporting documents and a signed Code of Conduct to Council via the online application process
-
Has conducted him/herself in such a manner that the election to professional membership will not detract from the dignity or standing of ASAPA

*Professional Membership is a registered designation with the South African Qualifications Authority
Technical
​
A person accepted for technical membership of ASAPA must meet the following criteria:

Is actively engaged in archaeological or related employment or involved in full-time archaeological or associated research in southern Africa at the time of submission of the application and meets the criteria of (2) OR (3) below

Has earned a BA or BSc Degree at a recognised tertiary institution with archaeology as a major or a nationally recognised certificate in archaeology or related fields

Has technical life skill experience in archaeology through full-time employment as an archaeological technician for at least three consecutive years, or part-time employment for at least five consecutive years, and have been supervised during this period by professional archaeologists

Has submitted the required supporting documents and a signed Code of Conduct to Council via the online application process

Has conducted him/herself in such a manner that the election to technical membership will not detract from the dignity or standing of ASAPA
Affiliate

ASAPA may accept applications for affiliate membership from persons who do not qualify for professional or technical membership. A person accepted for affiliate membership of ASAPA must meet the following criteria:

Has earned an Honours degree or equivalent qualification in archaeology at a recognised tertiary institution, but is not actively involved in archaeology and has demonstrated a continued interest in southern African archaeology; OR
-
Has qualified in other professions with the ability to advance archaeological research, management or outreach and demonstrated continued interest in southern African archaeology

Has submitted the required supporting documents and a signed Code of Conduct to Council via the online application process
-
Has conducted him/herself in such a manner that the election to affiliate membership will not detract from the dignity or standing of ASAPA
